Polish Months

Months in Polish: all 12 names and the forms used in dates

Learn three forms for each month: the dictionary name, the genitive used after a day number, and the locative used after w for in a month. That small set covers most beginner calendar sentences.

Polish writes month names with lowercase letters unless a month begins a sentence. Several names reflect seasons, plants, and traditional work, which can make them easier to remember than a list of unrelated sounds.

How to say a date in Polish

Polish normally combines an ordinal day with a genitive month. Dziś jest siódmy sierpnia means Today is the seventh of August. The day is understood as a calendar date, so English August seventh and the seventh of August lead to the same Polish pattern.

When another expression requires genitive, the ordinal also changes: Spotkanie jest siódmego sierpnia means The meeting is on the seventh of August. Learners should memorize both a calendar answer and an event-date answer.

Use w or we for in a month

To say in a particular month, use w plus locative: w maju, w lipcu, w grudniu. Before wrześniu, we wrześniu is the comfortable standard form because the extra vowel separates the consonant cluster.

For a range, use od... do... with genitive: od maja do sierpnia. For the beginning or end of a month, say na początku maja or pod koniec maja.

Pronunciation points worth noticing

Polish normally stresses the next-to-last syllable: STY-czeń, KWIE-cień, CZER-wiec, SIER-pień, WRZE-sień, paź-DZIER-nik, GRU-dzień. The audio buttons below use a Polish browser voice so you can compare the whole word rather than reading an English approximation as exact.

Soft consonants are central in styczeń, kwiecień, sierpień, wrzesień, and grudzień. Październik contains źdź, while czerwiec begins with cz. Work slowly, then return to normal rhythm.

Memory hooks inside Polish month names

Many Polish names are historically connected with weather, plants, farming, or seasonal change. Treat these as memory hooks rather than strict modern definitions; the exact historical origin of a name can be more complicated than one English gloss.

Lowercase spelling and common calendar mistakes

  • Write styczeń and sierpień with lowercase letters in ordinary sentences.
  • Use a genitive month after the day number: piąty marca, not piąty marzec.
  • Use locative after w: w czerwcu, not w czerwiec.
  • Remember that luty declines like an adjective: lutego and w lutym.
  • Say we wrześniu rather than forcing an awkward w wrześniu cluster.
  • Do not add an English-style preposition before every written date; Polish case forms already express the relationship.

A compact way to learn all twelve months

  • Learn the dictionary forms in four seasonal groups of three.
  • Add one genitive date for each month, such as pierwszy stycznia and pierwszy lutego.
  • Add one locative sentence, such as W maju jadę do Polski.
  • Shuffle English month prompts so you retrieve the Polish rather than recite a fixed chain.
  • Review soft consonants separately, then say the complete date at a natural pace.

FAQ

Are Polish month names capitalized?

No. Write month names with lowercase letters unless the month begins a sentence or belongs to a title that requires capitalization.

Why do Polish months change in dates?

A numbered date normally uses the month in genitive: pierwszy maja, dziesiąty lipca, and dwudziesty czwarty grudnia.

How do you say in May in Polish?

Say w maju. Expressions meaning in a month use w or we plus the locative form.

Why is February different?

Luty behaves like an adjective, so its common forms include lutego in a date and w lutym for in February.

How do you ask the date in Polish?

Który dzisiaj jest? is a common question. Answer Dziś jest... followed by an ordinal day and a genitive month.

What is the best way to memorize Polish months?

Learn the dictionary, date, and in-a-month forms together, connect selected names to seasonal memory hooks, and retrieve them in shuffled calendar sentences.
