Polish Days of the Week

Days of the week in Polish: names, schedule forms, and pronunciation

Learn each day with the expression you will actually use in a calendar. The preposition w normally takes an accusative weekday form when you mean on a particular day.

Weekday names are lowercase in ordinary Polish. Their endings also change when you describe repeated routines, last week, next week, or a range from one day to another.

Why the weekday changes after w

When w means on a particular weekday, it normally takes accusative. Masculine inanimate names such as poniedziałek and piątek look unchanged, while feminine środa, sobota, and niedziela change -a to -ę.

Wtorek usually follows we rather than w because we wtorek is easier to pronounce. This is the same preposition with an added vowel, not a different grammatical relationship.

poniedziałekw poniedziałeknone in the masculine inanimate accusative
wtorekwe wtorekwe avoids a difficult consonant cluster

Say every Monday, on Mondays, and every weekend

A plural weekday after w describes a repeated routine: W poniedziałki pracuję w domu means I work from home on Mondays. Co plus a singular accusative form is another productive pattern: co poniedziałek, co środę, co sobotę.

For weekends, w weekend means this or a contextually identified weekend, while w weekendy means on weekends. Co weekend emphasizes every weekend.

W piątek idę do kina.I am going to the cinema on Friday.one Friday
W piątki chodzę do kina.I go to the cinema on Fridays.repeated routine

Last, this, and next weekday must agree

The adjective changes with the weekday's gender and accusative form. Say w zeszły poniedziałek but w zeszłą środę; w przyszły piątek but w przyszłą sobotę.

In casual planning, Polish also uses the bare schedule phrase when the time frame is obvious: Widzimy się w czwartek can mean See you on Thursday without adding this or next.

From Monday to Friday and before or after a day

Od and do take genitive, so a range changes both weekday names: od poniedziałku do piątku. Przed takes instrumental and po takes locative in common time expressions: przed sobotą and po niedzieli.

These forms are useful enough to learn as complete calendar chunks before studying every ending in isolation.

Pronunciation and memory patterns

Stress normally falls on the next-to-last syllable: ponie-DZIA-łek, WTO-rek, ŚRO-da, CZWAR-tek, PIĄ-tek, so-BO-ta, nie-DZIE-la. The initial consonant clusters in wtorek and czwartek deserve slow practice before you speed up.

Several names contain useful number or position associations: środa is connected with the middle, czwartek with fourth, piątek with fifth, and poniedziałek historically points to the day after Sunday. Use these as memory supports, not as substitutes for retrieval practice.

Common weekday mistakes

  • Capitalizing weekday names in the middle of a sentence as English does.
  • Using w środa instead of the accusative w środę.
  • Forcing w wtorek instead of the standard and pronounceable we wtorek.
  • Using a singular weekday for a repeated routine when w piątki or co piątek is clearer.
  • Forgetting adjective agreement in w zeszłą środę and w przyszłą niedzielę.
  • Using dictionary forms after od and do instead of genitive forms such as poniedziałku and piątku.

FAQ

Are days of the week capitalized in Polish?

No. Write poniedziałek, wtorek, and the other weekday names with lowercase letters unless one begins a sentence.

How do you say on Monday in Polish?

Say w poniedziałek. For a repeated Monday routine, use w poniedziałki or co poniedziałek.

Why is it we wtorek?

We is a form of w used before some difficult consonant clusters. We wtorek is the standard comfortable pronunciation.

How do you say on Wednesday?

Say w środę. The feminine noun środa changes to the accusative form środę after w in a schedule expression.

How do you say Monday to Friday?

Say od poniedziałku do piątku. Both od and do require genitive forms.

What is weekend in Polish?

Weekend is common in Polish. W weekend means at or during the weekend; w weekendy or co weekend describes a repeated routine.
