Polish Numbers and Cases

Polish numbers change the noun form and sometimes the verb: the key split is one, two-to-four, and five or more.

In basic nominative and accusative quantity phrases, one agrees with a singular noun, two through four normally combine with a plural form, and five or more require genitive plural.

When a five-plus quantity is the subject, the verb is normally singular, with neuter singular agreement visible in the past tense: Pięć osób przyszło.

Quick answer: which noun form follows a Polish number?

The basic quantity pattern
QuantityNoun patternExample
1singular agreementjeden bilet, jedna kawa, jedno okno
2-4plural agreement in the basic non-masculine-personal patterndwa bilety, trzy kawy, cztery okna
5 and abovegenitive pluralpięć biletów, sześć kaw, siedem okien
Words such as dużo and małogenitivedużo czasu, mało pracy

One agrees like an adjective

Jeden changes for gender and case with the noun. In ordinary singular nominative phrases, use jeden for masculine, jedna for feminine, and jedno for neuter.

In a sentence, jeden can also mean one or a certain one rather than functioning as a necessary article. Polish often omits the numeral when singular quantity is already obvious.

Gender forms of one
GenderPhraseMeaning
Masculinejeden biletone ticket
Femininejedna kawaone coffee
Neuterjedno oknoone window

Two changes with gender and personhood

Masculine-personal numeral syntax offers more than one construction and agreement can vary with structure and register. Learn complete model sentences rather than replacing dwa mechanically.

Why five and above use genitive plural

In basic quantity phrases, numerals from five upward govern a genitive plural noun. This is why pięć minut, dziesięć złotych, and sto osób use forms that differ from two-to-four phrases.

Genitive plural is one of the less predictable noun forms, so numbers expose vocabulary gaps quickly. Save the full quantity phrase with the noun.

trzy kawysześć kawcoffees
cztery oknasiedem okienwindows
dwie osobydziesięć osóbpeople

Five-plus subject quantities normally take a singular verb

When a five-plus quantity phrase functions as the subject, standard Polish normally uses a singular verb. In the past tense, the verb appears in neuter singular: Pięć osób przyszło.

Two-to-four non-masculine-personal subject phrases normally take plural agreement: Dwie osoby przyszły. Masculine-personal structures have their own options and should be learned from full sentences.

Dwie osobyprzyszłyplural non-masculine-personal
Pięć osóbprzyszłosingular neuter past agreement
Dużo osóbprzyszłoquantity expression plus singular neuter past

Compound numbers follow their final part, with a teen exception

Compound numbers ending in 2, 3, or 4 generally use the two-to-four pattern, unless the number ends in 12, 13, or 14. Those teen forms belong to the five-plus genitive pattern.

This gives dwadzieścia dwa bilety but dwanaście biletów, and dwadzieścia cztery osoby but czternaście osób. Masculine-personal forms add separate complexity.

22dwadzieścia dwa biletyends in 2, not 12

24dwadzieścia cztery oknaends in 4, not 14
12dwanaście biletówteen exception
14czternaście okienteen exception
25dwadzieścia pięć osóbfive-plus pattern

Numbers also decline when the whole phrase changes case

A numeral phrase does not remain frozen outside nominative or accusative. The numeral and noun forms change according to the role of the whole phrase.

For example, z pięcioma osobami uses instrumental forms, while dla pięciu osób uses genitive after dla. The relationship between numeral and noun depends on the numeral type and case.

Collective numerals: dwoje, troje, czworo

Collective numerals are used with children and young beings, groups of mixed sex or gender in relevant contexts, and selected nouns that exist only in the plural. They require genitive plural nouns in their basic construction.

They are not interchangeable with ordinary cardinal numerals in every context. Learn the frequent noun combinations you actually need.

Common collective-numeral contexts
PhraseUse
dwoje dziecitwo children
troje studentówthree students as a mixed group, depending on context
czworo szczeniątfour puppies / young animals
dwoje drzwitwo doors as a plural-only noun

Quantity words behave like number triggers

Treat the quantity expression and noun form as one phrase. This reduces the need to reconstruct genitive plural under time pressure.

Frequent quantity expressions
TriggerExampleMeaning
dużodużo pracya lot of work
małomało czasulittle time
trochętrochę wodysome water
kilkakilka pytańa few questions
ileIle osób?How many people?
półpół godzinyhalf an hour

Common mistakes with Polish numbers

  • Using dwa with every gender: say dwie kawy and dwa okna.
  • Using nominative plural after five: pięć biletów, not pięć bilety.
  • Using a plural past-tense verb after a five-plus subject quantity: pięć osób przyszło.
  • Applying the 2-4 pattern to 12-14.
  • Avoiding collective numerals where the noun conventionally requires them.
  • Keeping the numeral unchanged when the entire phrase moves into another case.
  • Trying to master every masculine-personal variant before learning everyday price, time, and quantity phrases.
